FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - the protocol of files transfer in a network. FTP is used as the basic protocol for access to the big archives of files.

To familiarize with the maintenance of a FTP-server it is possible having taken advantage of any ftp-client, to go on: ftp://ftp.onu.edu.ua/ 

FTP is a protocol of data transmission. It is intended for transfer of files from the removed computer on local, and on the contrary. Besides with help FTP it is possible to work with the files on the removed computer (to rename, create catalogues to delete...). Some practice skills of work with FTP will be necessary for you in two basic cases: if you want to download a file (the program, updating of anti-virus base, text archive) from one of millions existing FTP-servers; at accommodation in a network the Internet of the site developed by you (the overwhelming majority of hostings - providers provide an opportunity to download a site on FTP).

Managers of FTP-servers try to name folders (and files) so that it was clear, that in them is. It is meaningful to download and to study one of such files, having disconnected from the Internet - you will save a lot of time. In uploading a file too there is nothing complex, for example click on it the right button of the mouse, choose "Copy", then - click the right button in that place where you want it to place, choose "Insert".

As you can see, work with files on FTP is not more difficult at all than work with files on a usual computer, difference only in time of performance of operations. However, by virtue of internal features, work as means Windows occupies a little longer time, than work with the help of the programs intended for it. As such program can act any of file managers, the majority of them can work with files through FTP. As an example we shall consider FAR Manager.

In this program the special panel for storage of the information on connections with FTP-servers is stipulated. To pass to it, press Alt+F1 (the left panel) or Alt+F2 and choose "FTP". If neither you, nor someone another did not use this panel earlier, t will be empty. For creation of new connection make this panel active (move there the cursor a key "Tab") and press "Shift+F4". In the first line of the opened window write (without inverted commas) "ftp://ftp.onu.edu.ua/" and press "Save". On earlier empty panel the inscription "ftp://ftp.onu.edu.ua/" will appear. Now at any moment (preliminary having connected with the Internet) you can bring the cursor to this inscription and press "Enter". Process of connection with a server will be displayed in grey information windows. The further work as anything, except for time of execution of operations, does not differ from work with files on your computer.
